Christmas Songs By Nolan P.

Merry Christmas dedicated readers. I hope the six of you are as excited for the holiday break as I am. As you know, every year around Thanksgiving an absurd amount of radio stations interrupt their normal routines and play exclusively Christmas songs until December 25th. Now, if you are like me, then you find this very annoying. The overplayed standards like “Jingle Bell Rock” just don’t do it for me anymore. So for this issue I have compiled a list of five Christmas songs that you may not have heard because they certainly aren’t on the radio…
Songs Reviewed:

1) Ludacris – “Ludachristmas”
2) Eazy-E – “Merry M**********n Christmas”
3) Snoop Dogg – “Santa Goes Straight to the Ghetto”
4) Run-DMC – “Christmas in Hollis”
5) De La Soul -  “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa”

1) Ludacris – “Ludachristmas”

Only Luda could crunk out Christmas. This is Ludacris doing what he normally does; it just happens to be on the 24th of December. Don’t let the hook fool you – the song is still ATL as ever.

2) Eazy-E – “Merry M**********n Christmas”

This song scares me. I can’t say much beyond that because it’s riddled with expletives. This is for the people who want an N.W.A. Christmas.

3) Snoop Dogg – “Santa Goes Straight to the Ghetto”

In typical Snoop style he delivers a smooth West Coast G-Funk Christmas banger for the “Christmas on Death Row” album. The beat could easily be for any Snoop Dogg song, but the lyrical theme is the meaning of Christmas… for Snoop Dogg. If Santa won’t deliver to south central then Snoop Dogg will do it for him.

4) Run-DMC – “Christmas in Hollis”

An uplifting Old School rap song about Christmas in the Queens.  Rev Run spits a feel good rhyme about finding Santa’s wallet and being rewarded for sending it back to Santa. DMC follows up with another family friendly verse. This is just fun for the whole family rap song. On a side note, Rev Run can be seen in the music video wearing a Portland Trail Blazers jacket. Go Blazers.

5) De La Soul -  “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa”

De La Soul is Pos, Trugoy the Dove, and Maseo; hip-hop trio from Long Island. New York. This is probably the most thought-provoking song about Christmas I have ever heard. The jazzy beat and somewhat silly lyrics make the song seem slightly more light than it actually is. This isn’t an ignorant ghetto rap songs about senseless violence, but rather a very dark tale about a girl named Millie who is facing serious domestic issues. Millie’s father is a respected member of the community and volunteers to be Santa Clause at Macy’s, but he is sexually abusive to his daughter. The story ends with a climactic confrontation at the Macy’s department store. It’s a bit of a damper but I recommend giving it a listen.
