Black Friday Facts by Jacqui B.

Black Friday has just gotten bigger and crazier over the years. Nearly 135 million people go out to shop on the day after Thanksgiving every year. This year was pretty monumental, though. Several department stores and other big ones like Target started their “door-busters” as early as Thanksgiving evening. And not just at 11 or midnight, but at 8 p.m. Why??

Apparently 59% of shoppers are there to buy electronic devices, according to todayifoundout.com. It makes sense, people want to get the best deals on Christmas shopping they can- I just think it’s pretty funny how ridiculous it gets. For example, something actually not so funny, in 2008 a Walmart employee was trampled to death. This year had some horror stories, too, not as bad as the 2008 one. This year was my first time really doing the whole Black Friday thing, but I still feel like I haven’t experienced anything, because I went only at 8 a.m, and I was in Anchorage, Alaska. “Crowded” for Anchorage is the normal for Washington Square. So for those of us who are longing for a real Black Friday experience, here are some examples of what we can look forward to if we decide to go for it next year!:

Two people were shot in Florida during a fight over a parking spot at Walmart
A two-year old boy was abandoned in a parking lot
A man pulled a gun at a line-cutter
A woman pulled a gun at a policeman, and then wrestled him for her confiscated items
Among many other gun sightings….

Yikes. Sorry to ruin the jolly Christmas shopping spirit.
