Portland Christmas Lights by Jacqui B.

Downtown Portland is really something that should be taken advantage of at Christmas time. The lights and view down each street blows my mind each time. I never want to leave. I’ll try as hard as I can to intentionally have a few hours to spend eating, getting hot chocolate or something, taking pictures, or just wandering whenever it’s possible.

If you have nothing to do over break, walking around the streets that are all lit up at night, especially the blocks around Pioneer Square is a great way to pass some time. And there’s the Starbucks at Pioneer Square and Cacao a few streets up on Broadway (the holiday cinnamon hot drinking chocolate is way too good). If you’re into photography there are so many great pictures down there too. I love it.

If you want to step inside or get a quick cheap meal, the happy hour seating lounge in the Heathman Hotel is pretty cool and pretty cheap. Theres all these little seating nooks and it feels like you’re on the Titanic at Christmas-time with the way it’s decorated. They have amazing $5 ham and cheese sandwiches and other similar things. Definitely get the “chocolate gourmandize”.

Also, I highly recommend stepping into Macy’s around closing time and just hanging out in their “Santa Land” downstairs. It’s too weird to pass up. Around 9 pm or so there’s no one down there but you and the creepy moving elves in the fake white sparkly forest scene and the moving reindeer heads lined up against a wall. But anyways, don’t pass these opportunities up in the next week or so!
